To create awareness and empower victims of spinal cord injuries due to road accidents that account for more than 11% deaths in the world, wheelchair bound Mohammed Javid is travelling across 28 States and six Union Territories to cover 30,000 km for sharing his story and reach out to people with his teammates Kannadasan and Jasiq Zameer. As part of his awareness drive ‘Spine Yatra’, he reached the State capital Kohima on Thursday. On January 11, 2011, Javid had met with an accident that led to his severe back and neck injuries, besides a spinal cord injury. Due to lack of proper equipment and the improper way of putting him on a stretcher with no close surveillance and transported onto the ambulance stretcher with no additional physical support or proper equipment, his injuries got critical. Thereafter, Javid had to undergo rehabilitation for six months during which he realised that there was a need to raise awareness across the country on spinal cord injuries. Interacting with the media here, he said victims of such injuries usually keep themselves indoors and shut themselves from the outside world. Through this campaign, he said he wanted to inspire people with injuries like him to live their lives to the fullest and help victims of road accidents. The 33-year-old from Chennai, who is currently working as a banker, mentioned that his campaign “MJ on Wheels” was launched on March 8, coinciding with the International Women’s Day, and would head to Tezpur next, followed by Itanagar. With financial support from his close friends and his own savings, he said he was covering about 400 km in a day by driving for seven to eight hours. And as a tribute to his mentor S Vaidyanthan Singararaman, Javid said he was on a mission to motivate people for rehabilitation to relive their lives. This was also an official attempt for the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest road drive with disability, he added. Referring to his visit to the North-eastern region, Javid admitted that driving by someone on a wheelchair in the hilly terrains was a real challenge and appealed to authorities concerned to take special initiative for disabled people. Sharing his experience, he said driving on national highways 37 and 8 as both required repair.
